Lady Cougars drop Williams Baptist 87-59 to improve to 9-0 in league play

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia Lady Cougar basketball team remained undefeated in American Midwest Conference (AMC) regular season action tonight, downing Williams Baptist (Ark.) College 87-59. The Lady Cougars, who are ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, are 21-2 overall and 9-0 in AMC action. Tonight’s loss drops Williams Baptist to 12-10 overall and 5-4 against conference foes.
The Lady Cougars held the Eagles to 39 percent shooting performance for the game. Columbia committed 17 turnovers, but used balanced scoring and strong play from Veronica Smith Rachel Oswald and Whitney Widaman to come away with the 28-point victory.
Columbia led Williams Baptist 35-24 at halftime. In addition, the Lady Cougars outrebounded the visiting squad 44-30.
Cougar forward Veronica Smith dropped in 22 points. Oswald and Widaman added 19 points apiece while Denise Rosario chipped in 12 points. Amanda Phillips finished with a team high nine rebounds and five blocked shots.
Jessica Shepard led the Eagles with 16 points.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Lady Cougars travel to Parkville, Mo. to take on Park (Mo.) University at 2 p.m. Columbia prevailed in the first meeting vs. Park earlier this year, defeating the Pirates 67-48 on Jan. 9 in Columbia.
