Lady Cougars trounce Harris-Stowe

St. Louis, Mo. – The Columbia Lady Cougar basketball team whipped American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University tonight, defeating the Hornets 70-38. The win moves the Lady Cougars, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, to 19-2 overall and 7-0 in league play. The loss drops Harris-Stowe to1-17 on the season and 0-7 versus conference opponents.
Columbia held the Hornets to just 14 percent shooting in the first frame, allowing them to connect on just four field goals while the Lady Cougars shot 49 percent from the field. Columbia put on a 28-3 run and took the 42-9 advantage at the half.
The Lady Cougars led by as many as 42 before walking away with the 32-point victory on 37 percent shooting.
All nine Lady Cougars scored tonight, with senior Whitney Widaman leading the way. Widaman had 23 points, including 15 from beyond the arc. Whitney also dished out six assists. Rachel Oswald added 16 points and nine rebounds while Amanda Philips had nine points, nine rebounds and seven blocks. Veronica Smith finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Cougars host No. 19 ranked William Woods (Mo.) University on Saturday, January 30th. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Owls are 18-1 on the season and behind the Lady Cougars in the AMC with a 6-1 record.
