Coach not letting Cougars take it easy
Melinda Wrye-Washington wants more consistency from her team

COLUMBIA — Columbia College volleyball coach Melinda Wrye-Washington shouted to her players as they sprinted up and down the court. “If you’re not a team player you’re not in,” she yelled. “It’s not OK to lose ballgames, not on my watch.” The Cougars are 11-4 this season and undefeated in American Midwest Conference play. They are ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll and haven’t lost to a team ranked lower than No. 14.

Columbia College played organized, sound soccer for 89 minutes, 42 seconds. "I wish that last one hadn’t gone in," Cougars Coach John Klein said of Illinois-Springfield’s lone goal with 18 seconds remaining in the contest. "But I think it is something to build on for sure. The guys did a good job defensively. That is the most organized game we’ve played from a defensive standpoint."

Not good in the sense that the Cougars played well against a quality opponent, but good in the sense that it revealed players’ character when under pressure and highlighted the areas Columbia needs to improve.
