Columbia College named an NAIA Champions of Character Institution
Olathe, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named 111 colleges and universities, including Columbia College, to the list of Champions of Character institutions for the 2005-06 school year. These Champions of Character institutions continue to embrace the program by promoting or implementing activities related to the five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
“The Champions of Character program offers institutions a game plan dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics. The institutions recognized are not only creating a positive experience for students but also fostering environments that not only teach competition but life lessons that can be used in all realms of sport and society,” said NAIA Director of Champions of Character Initiatives Rob Miller. “Success follows teams that incorporate the Champions of Character philosophy into athletic programs. The program is designed to build great teams and great people and these institutions should be commended for their dedication and commitment to the initiative.”
Introduced in 2000, the nationally recognized Champions of Character program seeks to create environments in which student-athletes, youth, parents, coaches, officials and spectators are committed and understand the true spirit of competition.
In addition to designated Champions of Character institutions the NAIA has developed 27 Champions of Character program centers across the country. Program centers coordinate community outreach activities that integrate with existing institutional initiatives and fit the specific needs of the local community. In developing outreach efforts, each program center has at its disposal a range of educational publications, programs and resources available from the NAIA national office.
