Volleyball Cougars finish CMU Invitational with a perfect record;
Soccer Cougars knock off second ranked opponent of the year

Fayette, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar volleyball team finished play in the Central Methodist University Invitational today defeating Benedictine (Kan.) College (30-27, 30-18, 30-22) and host Central Methodist (Mo.) University (30-19, 30-23, 32-30). With today's wins the Cougars, who are ranked No. 3 in the preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve their overall record to 4-0 on the season.

Columbia opens its home schedule next Friday and Saturday in the Best Western/KMIZ Volleyball Classic.  The Cougars face Concordia (Neb.) University on Friday at noon and Black Hills State (S.D.) University at 6 p.m.  Other top 25 teams in this year’s classic include No. 6 ranked Missouri Baptist University and No. 13 ranked Georgetown (Ky.) University.

Hastings, Neb. - The Columbia Cougar soccer team recorded its second win over a ranked opponent in as many days knocking off No. 23 ranked Bellevue (Neb.) University, 2-0.  The win pushes Columbia’s record to 2-0.  Bellevue falls to 0-2 on the season.

Columbia’s Justin Robinson scored the first goal of the match in the 25th minute off an assist from Chris Wright.  Robinson also played a part in the Cougars’ second goal dishing out an assist to Marcos Fernandes in the 54th minute.

Tanner Mills picked up his second win and shutout of the season in goal for Columbia.  

The Cougars next game will be their home opener on Tuesday, September 5 when they take on No. 12 ranked Lindenwood (Mo.) University at 7 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen Soccer Field.  There will be free admission for those who wear their Columbia Soccer Club jersey to the game.

Volleyball and Soccer Cougars start 2006 season with wins

Fayette, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar volleyball team opened the 2006 season with two wins in the first day of the Central Methodist University Invitational today, defeating Evangel (Mo.) University in four games (28-30, 30-15, 30-14, 30-23) and topping Missouri Valley College in four sets (28-30, 30-13, 30-20, 30-15). With the wins, the Cougars, who are ranked No. 3 in the preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve to 2-0 on the season.

Luana Branco set up a balanced attack for the Cougars that was led by Alice Mucheke and Yi Zhang.  

Columbia returns to Fayette tomorrow to face Benedictine (Kan.) College at 11 a.m. and Central Methodist (Mo.) University at 6 p.m.

Hastings, Neb. – The Columbia Cougar soccer squad also notched its first win of the 2006 season today vs. No. 6 ranked Hastings (Neb.) College, dropping the Broncos 1-0.  The win pushes Columbia’s record to 1-0.

The two teams went scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play.  The Cougars pulled ahead 1-0 in the 71st minute on a Lloyd Jacobs goal that was assisted by Nick Kelly.

Tanner Mills picked up the win and shutout in goal for Columbia.  The Cougars posted 6 shots to the Broncos 4. 

The Cougars continue play in Nebraska tomorrow with a 6 p.m. showdown against No. 23 ranked Bellevue (Neb.) University.

Volleyball Cougars garner No. 3 position in preseason ranking

Olathe, Kan. – The Columbia College volleyball squad earned the third position in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, released yesterday by the national office.

California Baptist University, last year’s NAIA National Champion and the team that beat the Cougars in the championship match, holds the top spot with all 13 first place votes and 325 points. Fresno Pacific (Calif.) University is second with 304 points.

The Cougars kick-off the 2006 season on August 25-26 when they travel to Fayette, Mo. to compete in the Central Methodist University Invitational.   

The Cougars open their home schedule the following weekend, September 1-2, in the Best Western/KMIZ Classic in the Southwell Complex. Matches will be played on two courts and begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 1 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 2. Two other teams in this year’s classic are also ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25.  No. 6 ranked Missouri Baptist University and No. 13 ranked Georgetown University.
