Lady Cougars Host Clinic for local girl scouts

Columbia, Mo. - On Saturday, January 20, 2007 the Columbia College Lady Cougars Basketball team showed up to host a two hour basketball clinic for a very special group of young ladies.

From 9-11 a.m. on Saturday morning the players, coaches, and staff of the Columbia College Lady Cougars Basketball team came together to introduce 43 girl scouts, from the Columbia area, to the game of basketball and to help them earn one of their patches.

The morning started off with some stretching, and after everyone was loosened up each of the 12 lady cougars divided the girls into smaller groups to get the fun started.  Once all of the girls were grouped with a player they began learning the basic fundamentals of basketball, dribbling and passing.  To make the learning process a bit more fun a few relay races took place.

Once the girls got the basics of dibbling and passing down it was break time.  The girls ran off the court to get the snacks and refreshments that were awaiting them.  While the coaches got ready for round two.  After a 10 minute break and some snacks the girls came back ready to go.

The girls were broken off into groups again and assigned to a player who took them to one of the 6 baskets in the Southwell Complex to work on shooting.  While working on shooting the girls were taught how to shoot lay-ups and jump-shots.  Various drills were used to help teach these shots.  The day ended with a round of knock out, everyone’s favorite game.

After a fun filled morning of basketball it was time to say good bye.  Before departing however, the Lady Cougars passed out a signed team poster to each of the girls.  In addition to the poster each of the girls was given a ticket to the Lady Cougars game against the University of Illinois-Springfield.  Then they each received their “try it” patch for participating in the clinic.

This was a great opportunity for the Lady Cougars to give back to the community by not only volunteering their time to teach a group of young ladies about the game that has been so much a part of their own lives, but also in helping them to earn another patch, which is something very important to them as girl scouts.
