Soccer match vs. Rio Grande (Ohio) has been canceled
Due to weather, facility and scheduling conflicts by the host institution, today's soccer game vs. the University Rio Grande (Ohio) has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.
Columbia's next game is the home opener Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Northwestern (Iowa) College. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Free admission for those who wear their youth soccer jersey to the game.

Late goal by Navarrete secures tie for Cougars
Maryland Heights, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar soccer squad came from behind in its first outing of the 2005 season to tie Bethel (Ind.) College 2-2. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, start the season 0-0-1.
Sophomore forward Justin Robinson gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when he received a pass from junior Chris Wright, dribbled by one defender and then slid the ball past the keeper inside the near post. Bethel answered just three minutes later when goalie Nano Recondo’s clearance of a cross landed at the top of the 18 yard box, where a Bethel player chested the ball to his feet and placed it into the back of the net.
Bethel scored their second goal of the game in the 35th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick.
Bethel took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Columbia had numerous scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to get the tying goal until the final minutes of play. With five minutes remaining in the match, senior Ivan Navarrete back heeled a cross from Steven Reineke for the game tying goal.
Bethel College, which is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, notched 7 shots, while Columbia tallied eight. Senior Nano Recondo got the start in goal for the Cougars, giving up two goals with two saves in 45 minutes of action. Freshmen Tanner Mills replaced Recondo in the second half, allowing no goals and making three saves.
The game was suspended in the 90th minute due to darkness.
The Cougars look for their first win of the season tomorrow night when they travel back to Maryland Heights, Mo. to take on the 5th ranked Redmen from the University of Rio Grande (Ohio). Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Soccer Cougars ranked No. 20 in preseason poll
Olathe, Kan. - The Columbia Cougar soccer team earned the No. 20 ranking in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, released today by the national office. Lindenwood (Mo.) University, last year’s NAIA National Champion, holds the No. 1 position, garnering all 13 first place votes. The Cougars will face-off against Lindenwood this season on Oct. 6 in St. Charles, Mo. Region foe Baker University, who the Cougars play on Tuesday, September 7 in Baldwin City, Kan., earned the No. 15 ranking. To view the entire preseason poll, visit www.naia.org.
The Cougars, who return 13 players from last season’s 14-3-2 squad, kickoff the 2005 season this Friday, Aug. 26 vs. No. 14 ranked Bethel (Ind.) College in Maryland Heights, Mo. Columbia plays their second game of the season this Saturday, Aug 27 vs. No. 5 ranked University of Rio Grand (Ohio) in Maryland Heights, Mo. Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m.

Cougars end preseason with loss
Rolla, Mo. – The Cougar soccer team finished preseason play yesterday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to NCAA Division II University of Missouri-Rolla. The Cougars finished their preseason schedule with a 2-1 record.
Columbia took the early lead on Marcos Fernandes’ second goal of the preseason in the tenth minute of play. Rolla tied the score in the 33rd minute on a breakaway goal off Nano Recondo. Rolla’s game winning goal came in the fifth minute of the second half on a half volley shot that got by goalkeeper Tanner Mills.
The Cougars begin regular season play on the road vs. Bethel (Ind.) College on Aug. 26 and the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) on Aug. 27 in Maryland Heights, Mo. Bethel was ranked No. 9 and Rio Grande was ranked No. 1 in last year’s final NAIA Top 25 Poll.

Cougars secure second preseason victory
Columbia, Mo. – The Cougar soccer team continued preseason play tonight with a 1-0 victory in the annual alumni match. Forward Justin Robinson scored his second goal of the preseason on an assist from Marcos Fernandes in the seventh minute of play.

Cougar Soccer victorious in scrimmage
Moberly, Mo. – The Cougar soccer team began their preseason schedule last night with a 3-1 victory over Jefferson College from Hillsboro, Mo. Forwards Marcos Fernandes and Justin Robinson each scored one goal and midfielder Judson Ball netted the third goal off a free-kick.
The Cougars continue preseason play this Friday night in their annual alumni scrimmage. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Owens Soccer Stadium on the Columbia College campus.

Volleyball Cougars garner No. 3 position in preseason ranking
Olathe, Kan.. – The Columbia College volleyball squad earned the third position in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, released yesterday by the national office.
The Cougar volleyball squad received 294 points and one first place vote. California Baptist University, last year’s NAIA National Champion, holds the top spot with 12 first place votes and 324 points. Fresno Pacific (Calif.) University is second with 311 points. The 2005 Cougar volleyball team features two-time All-American Doris Wefwafwa and AMC Honorable Mention recipients Nancy Sikobe and Jenna Holdmeyer.
The Cougars kick-off the 2005 season on Sept. 2-3 when they host the Best Western/KMIZ Classic in the Southwell Complex. Matches will be played on three courts and begin at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 2 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 3. Two other teams in this year’s classic are also ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25. Cougar Soccer ready to kick off preseason
Columbia, Mo. – The 2005 Columbia Cougar soccer team begins preseason training this evening in hopes of building on last year’s American Midwest Conference (AMC) Championship, No. 12 final ranking and 14-3-2 record. The Cougars ultimate goal is a trip to Dayton Beach, Florida in late November for the programs second appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
Head Coach John Klein’s 2005 squad has a solid base of 13 returning players of which five were fulltime starters. Klein lost six starters to graduation including the team’s leading goal scorer, Juan Pablo Irrera, and goal keeper Steve Williams. Klein will look for those holes to be filled with 15 new recruits consisting of junior college transfers and incoming freshmen.
Top returners include First Team All-American defender Vladimir Roganovic, Honorable Mention All-American midfielder Matt Mueller and AMC Honorable Mention defender Micah Bolton.
The Cougars play nine regular season home matches this season on the newly renovated R. Marvin Owens Soccer stadium. The playing surface was completely reseeded, the field’s length and width was increased and two new grandstands were added. Home game opponents include No. 18 ranked Grand View College (Iowa) on Sept. 18 and No. 28 ranked William Carey College (Miss.) on Sept. 19.
The Cougars also have a very impressive road schedule with five of their eight games against teams ranked in last season’s final top 25. Those opponents include No. 9 ranked Bethel College (Ind.) on Aug. 26, No. 1 ranked University of Rio Grand (Ohio) on Aug. 27, No. 21 ranked Baker University (Kan.) on Sept. 7, defending national champion and No. 7 ranked Lindenwood University on Oct. 6 and No. 25 ranked Mid-Continent University (Ky.) on Oct. 29.

Volleyball Cougars looking for another championship season
Columbia, Mo. -- The Columbia Cougar volleyball team starts training later today with their eyes set on another great season. The Cougars return four players from last season’s 43-5 squad that finished third in the NAIA National Tournament. In 2004, the Cougars collected the program’s twelfth consecutive American Midwest Conference (AMC) title as well as its tenth straight region championship.
This year’s team features returning two-time All-American Doris Wefwafwa and AMC Honorable Mention recipients Nancy Sikobe and Jenna Holdmeyer.

Lady Cougars add Helen Ogunjimi to the roster
Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College women’s basketball coach Mike Davis officially announced today that he has signed Helen Ogunjimi, a 5’10 junior forward, to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Lady Cougars beginning this fall.
Ogunjimi, who is a native of Chicago, Ill., averaged 18 points per game as a senior in high school before attending Iowa Western Community College for two years. At Iowa Western Helen averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game while leading her team to a 26-5 record.
“Helen is a great addition to our roster,” stated Davis. “She is very athletic and has the quickness and strength to do well at this level.”
