Two Cougars earn All-America Scholar-Athlete  honors,
Stephanie Stowe and Heather Robey garner NAIA All-American honors

Columbia, Mo. – Two members of the softball squad have been named NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar-Athletes. Members of the squad must hold at least junior status academically and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Juniors Stephanie Kababie and Chris Schoonover are 2006 recipients of the award.

Kababie and Schoonover, who will both return for their senior seasons next year, are majoring in communications and mathematics, respectively.

In addition Stephanie Stowe and Heather Robey have been awarded NAIA All-American honors, according to an official release from the NAIA National Office earlier today. Stowe, a designated player, is just the ninth Cougar player to receive first team honors, while Robey, a left-handed hurler, earned second team honors. 

Stowe, a junior from Beulah, Manitoba, Canada, was named to the American Midwest Conference (AMC) First Team and the  Region V First Team.   Stowe  played in 51 games for Columbia and led the Cougars at the plate, posting a .375 batting average with 51 hits in 136 at-bats. She logged nine doubles and six home runs, in addition to a team-high 43 RBIs.

Robey, a pitcher from New Madrid, Mo., was also named to the American Midwest Conference (AMC) First Team and the  Region V First Team.  In her junior campaign, Robey posted an 18-8 pitching record for Columbia. She threw 169.1 innings, giving up only 25 earned runs for an ERA of 1.33.  Robey fanned 214 batters, while giving up only 104 hits and 60 walks.

The Cougars wrapped up the 2006 season earlier this month when they finished seventh at the Region V postseason tournament.

Cougar basketball adds second player to recruiting class

Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College men’s basketball coach Bob Burchard officially announced today that Columbia College has signed Trae Hall, a sophomore at Connors State College in Warner, Okla., to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Cougars beginning next season.

Hall, a 6’1” guard originally from Tulsa, Okla., averaged six points per game this past season at Connors State College.

Former Cougar basketball player Andre Amos was Hall’s assistant coach at Connors State.

Cougar basketball signs William Boatwright to letter of intent

Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College men’s basketball coach Bob Burchard officially announced today that Columbia College has signed William Boatwright, a sophomore at Neosho Community College in Neosho, Mo., to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Cougars beginning next season.

“We are very excited to have Willie join our program,” said Burchard.  “He will make an immediate impact in our forward position.  He is a very skilled player who has competed in the tough Jayhawk conference.” 

Boatwright, a 6-foot 7-inch 220-pound post player, averaged nine points and nine rebounds per game this past season.

Boatwright, who went to high school in East Orange, New Jersey, was coached by former University of Missouri guard John McIntyre during his two years at Neosho Community College.

Cougar soccer signs Hickman’s Jordan Cox to letter of intent

Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College men’s soccer head coach John Klein officially announced today that Columbia College has signed Jordan Cox, a senior at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo., to a national letter of intent to play soccer for the Cougars next season.

Cox was named First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State during his senior year at Hickman.

Cox plays club soccer for Columbia Pride where he is coached by current Cougar Soccer assistants Ryan Swan and Kevin Roderique.

Two softball Cougars earn Academic honors

Columbia, Mo. - Two members of the 2006 Columbia Cougar softball squad have been honored as recipients of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District softball team.   Junior Christina Schoonover and sophomore Sarah Moreau are First and Second Team recipients, respectively. 

To be eligible for the honor, recipients must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).  She must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year.  Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games in their position.  All institutions are separated by Divisions and Districts.  Columbia College falls into the College Division, competing against NCAA Div. II and III schools as well as all other NAIA schools.  District 7, which Columbia is a part of, consists of nine states and two Canadian provinces.


Moreau, a catcher for the Cougars, holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average, is a two time Academic All-Conference recipient and has received  such honors as, Most Outstanding Female Political Science Student and Philosophy Student as well as receiving the 2006 Schiffman Ethics Endowment Scholarship for her work in the classroom.  Sarah was second team award recipient and one of only two catchers to be honored in the district. 

Schoonover, a mathematics major and outfielder for Columbia, was one of just four outfielders to collect First Team honors.  Christina is a three time Academic All-Conference winner and was recently named Columbia College's Most Outstanding Math Major.  She is an active member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, and has presented at the National and Regional T3 Mathematics Conferences.  As a member of the District 7 First Team, Schoonover has a chance to advance to compete for Academic All-America honors.

Softball Cougars end season with two losses at Region V Tournament

Springfield, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar softball team failed to advance in the Region V tournament today, dropping their first two games.  The Cougars, who entered the tournament with a No. 5 seed, fell to No. 4 seeded McKendree (Ill.) College 4-1 in the first game and then to the No. 8 seed Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College 10-8, in eight innings, in the second game.  The losses end Columbia’s season at 38-17. 

In the first game Columbia jumped out to an early lead.   In the top of the first Columbia’s Lindsey Williams scored on a fielder’s choice, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  McKendree then took control scoring one run in the fourth and three in the sixth.  McKendree was able to hold off Columbia to walk away with the three run victory. 

Amanda Hodges and Sarah Moreau had one hit a piece.

Heather Robey (18-8) took the loss, giving up four hits, three earned runs and four walks. The junior hurler fanned seven Bearcat batters in six innings of work. 

In the second game, Columbia scored two in the first to again take the early lead.  Hannibal answered back in the second with two of their own.  Hannibal then scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth, while the Cougars scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth.  At the end of seven innings the score was tied at five. 

Hannibal managed to load the bases with no outs and score five runs on four hits bringing the score to 10-5 in favor of the Trojans.  Columbia fought back in the bottom of the eighth with back to back home runs by Ashley Perrigo and Stephanie Stowe, which combined to score three runs.  However, Columbia was held to only three runs as Hannibal came away with the victory. 

Moreau and Chris Schoonover chipped in three hits a piece, while Williams posted two hits.  Perrigo ended with one hit and four RBIs.

Katie McMahon (16-8) notched the loss, pitching 3.2 innings.  She gave up five hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Kendra Koch (4-1) relieved McMahon in the third, pitching two innings.  Koch gave up one walk and one hit.  Robey relieved Koch in the sixth, facing 13 batters and giving up three hits and four walks while striking out four.  McMahon returned to the mound in the eighth facing five batters and posting two strikeouts and allowing two hits. 

Prior to the Cougars first game, members of the Academic All-Region teams were announced.  Cougars Stephanie Kababie, Chris Schoonover and Kendra Koch received the honor for their work in the classroom.

Cougar volleyball signs Jessica Williams to letter of intent


Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College volleyball coach Melinda Washington officially announced today that Columbia College has signed Jessica Williams, a senior from Camdenton High School in Camdenton, Mo., to a national letter of intent to play volleyball for the Cougars beginning next season.

Williams is a two-time First Team All-District and three-time First Team All-Ozark Conference selection. During her senior campaign she was the only libero and defensive specialist named First Team All-State.   

She is a three year varsity letter winner and led Camdenton to a district title in 2004 and a conference championship in 2005.  Williams was coached by Ann Gulshen, who was also Coach Washington’s high school coach at Eldon High School. 

Off the court Williams is involved in numerous school organizations including Student Council, National Honors Society, Tri-L, Foreign Language Club, A+ Tutoring and School-to-Work.  Williams will also be awarded Columbia College’s President’s Scholarship for her work in the classroom throughout her high school career.

Khalia Collier signs a national letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Columbia College

Columbia, Mo. - Columbia College women’s basketball coach Mike Davis officially announced today that Columbia College has signed Khalia Collier, a senior at Fort Zumwalt South in St. Louis, Mo., to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Lady Cougars beginning next season.

Collier, a 5’10” forward, averaged 14 points and six rebounds last season for Fort Zumwalt. She shot 40 percent from behind the arc and 73 percent from the charity stripe.  Collier is a two-time All-Conference and Scholar-Athlete recipient.   She also helped lead her team to back-to-back district titles. 

Collier will join a 2006-07 Lady Cougar squad that returns five of its players from the 2005-06 campaign, which finished with a mark of 18-13 and advanced to the second round of the American Midwest Conference tournament.  Under Davis, the Lady Cougars have won four American Midwest Conference titles and made four National Tournament appearances in the past five years.
