MAJOR RULES OF PLAY

1.  The ball remains in play when a team forces a ball to hit a ceiling anywhere on its own side of the net and the net extended, provided that the team can legally play the ball next. Otherwise, the ball is blown dead and awarded to the other side.

2.  The side and end lines are in bounds.

3.  Each team can hit the ball no more than 3 times before the ball crosses the net again, unless there is simultaneous contact by opponents. A block does not count as one of the three hits.

4.  If the serve touches the net, inside the antennas (sidelines), it is LIVE and must be played.  A serve will be deemed out of play if it hits a post, net support, antennas, or the net outside of the court boundary.

5.  A serve may not be blocked.

6.  Double hits and lifts may be called as judged by the official.

7.   A ball may be played from out of bounds provided it goes over the net between the two antennae.

8.  When playing a game with four (4) players all players except the server will be considered in the front row (for hitting and blocking purposes.) When playing a game with five (5) players, all players except the two most recent servers are considered in the front row.

9.  Teams shall change sides of the court after each game.

10.  Each team is allowed one time-out per game (1 minute). Unused time-outs do not carry over.

LEGAL HITS

Forearm Pass:  If two arms are used, ball must strike both forearms simultaneously. Cup one hand into the other and keep elbows straight.

Set:  Ball is contacted by fingers and thumbs of both hands. Get under ball, bend knees, elbows bent and pointing out, index fingers and thumb form a triangle.

Spike:  Approach from behind the ball with the ball overhead. Lead spiking arm with elbow, snap heel of hand into the ball as non-spiking arm is driven down. Do not direct ball by carrying it in your hands. Hit cleanly, instantaneously.

Block:  Jump straight up toward direction of spike, near to net with hands above head spread to cover as much space as possible. You may reach over the net to block a ball that has been spiked. (You may NOT reach over the net to block a ball that is being set!)

Serve:  Both feet must be behind black line. Any position behind the back line is allowed. Hold or toss the ball with one hand and hit it (overhand or underhand) with the other.
